I challenge my clients every day to step out of their comfort zones on the path to creating the life they want. This is the only way we can heal and grow. The good news is it isn't all at once! Baby steps! A big step can be to come into my office for that first session. Maybe it's the first time you make art with me, amidst all your "inner critic parts" telling you you look silly or aren't good at art (I promise you 1. you do NOT look silly, you look brave and 2. it doesn't matter if you're good at art or not, totally besides the point- buuuut I do get it). Maybe you step out of your comfort zone when you go home after a session and have a hard conservation you've been avoiding. Often my clients are moving beyond comfort as they work to change a behavior or belief that no longer serves them. So, all that to say I'm here with you, stepping out of MY comfort zone and sharing some of my art!
Nowadays, I do use art on a regular basis as a part of my self- care and healing journey (honestly, I can't say I always did this) and so I have art piling up around my house! I was feeling brave today, so I thought I would share- so you can see what I have been up to, and also to step out of my comfort zone. I LOVE making art. I don't really love sharing it. I too have my inner critic parts :) But the good thing is, I have been able to make peace with them now. Also, as an art therapist I now know that me CREATING, expressing myself and working through the PROCESS of artmaking is what is healing and beings joy to my life. So I paint intuitively, following what my heart tells me, not what I think other people will like. When I do it this way, I think the results are fun, colorful, and thoughtful- an expression of ME.
If anything here resonates, and you'd like to take one home, please reach out. (Quickly because I often change and paint over my art! That's a fun part of the Art Therapy process. What I like one day may change the next and not taking my art choices too seriously reminds me to do the same in life. It's ok to change course, change your mind and if we don't like something, we can usually change it! ) So- EXPRESS yourself (art, music, writing, journaling, movement) and be intentional about stepping out of your comfort zone, even if just a little- and see what happens in your life!
